Orange Launches 5G Network in Botswana

Orange launched a 5G network in Botswana, marking an important step in the development of next-generation mobile broadband connectivity in the country. The initial 5G coverage focuses on Gaborone and Francistown, Botswana's two largest cities, with plans at the time to expand the network to additional areas.

The deployment reflects the continued development of 5G networks across African markets, where operators are exploring new ways to provide faster and more accessible broadband services to homes, businesses and other users.

Fixed Wireless Access as an Important 5G Use Case

One of the important applications highlighted by Orange in Botswana is 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA). Instead of relying entirely on traditional fixed-line infrastructure, FWA uses a mobile network to provide broadband connectivity to homes and businesses.

This approach can be particularly useful in markets where fixed broadband infrastructure is limited or where extending fiber networks to every location can require significant investment. With 5G FWA, operators can use their wireless networks together with customer premises equipment such as 5G CPE and 5G routers to deliver broadband internet access.

For end users, a 5G CPE receives the operator's 5G mobile signal and converts it into Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet connectivity for devices inside a home, office or other premises. This makes FWA an important connection between 5G mobile networks and everyday broadband applications.

Growing Demand for 5G CPE and Wireless Broadband

As operators expand 5G coverage, the development of FWA can also create new opportunities for 5G CPE, indoor 5G routers and outdoor 5G CPE.

Indoor 5G CPE can provide convenient broadband connectivity in homes and offices, while outdoor CPE can be useful in deployment scenarios where stronger signal reception or flexible installation is required. These devices allow operators and service providers to extend mobile broadband services without requiring a traditional wired connection at every customer location.

For telecom operators, ISPs and other service providers, the combination of 5G networks and FWA equipment provides another option for expanding broadband coverage and serving users in different deployment environments.

5G Development Across African Markets

At the time of the Botswana launch, Orange was already operating across multiple markets in Africa and the Middle East. The company also indicated plans to introduce 5G services in additional countries as spectrum, regulatory conditions and network deployment plans developed.

The Botswana deployment therefore represented more than the introduction of a new mobile network. It also demonstrated how 5G FWA and wireless broadband could become practical applications of 5G technology in African markets.

As 5G networks continue to develop, operators need suitable devices on the customer side to turn network coverage into usable broadband services. Products such as 5G CPE, 5G FWA routers and outdoor 5G routers can play an important role in connecting homes, offices and businesses to high-speed mobile broadband networks.

5G FWA Creates New Connectivity Opportunities

The development of 5G in Botswana highlights the potential of Fixed Wireless Access as an alternative broadband solution. By combining 5G network coverage with suitable CPE devices, operators can provide high-speed wireless broadband in locations where traditional fixed infrastructure may be difficult or costly to deploy.

For the broader telecom industry, the continued expansion of 5G networks is expected to create more opportunities for 5G CPE, FWA routers and mobile broadband devices, supporting flexible connectivity solutions for residential, business and enterprise applications.
